About SOALS Project:

Several studies have shown a link between gum disease and type 2 diabetes. Because diabetes may influence the risk of developing gum disease, and this in turn may aggravate diabetes, we are conducting a research study that lasts five years (2010-2015) to understand the relationship between the gum disease and pre -clinical stage of type 2 diabetes.  This webpage describes this study, as well as providing the necessary contact information to communicate with members of the research team, if necessary.

The SOALS study will investigate whether individuals with periodontal disease are more predisposed to increase their blood glucose level compared with people without this disease. In addition, the study will assess whether people who have high glucose levels experience greater progression of periodontal disease compared to people with normal glucose levels. This study will help understand whether this condition is a cause or consequence of diabetes, or both.
